Classical Guitar by Hola! Music Review – Cheap and Cheerful Classical

Unlike some of the other models on our chart of the best classical guitars under $150 – such as Cordoba or Yamaha – this affordable model doesn’t have the name of a big brand behind it. However, the classical guitar from Hola! Music still shows off some very desirable features for a beginner on a budget.

Body And Neck

To describe this guitar as ‘no frills’ wouldn’t exactly be fair, although there is nothing over the top in terms of design – it’s a full-size nylon-stringed guitar, which sports traditional classical looks. However, the eye-catching glossy finish, attractive rosette, body binding, and craftsmanship exudes a high quality – higher than the inexpensive price tag suggests anyway. Even the materials used to construct it look like something you’d find on a pricier model. These are quite typical woods for this style of guitar, with spruce on the top, and mahogany on the back and sides. Mahogany is also used for the neck, while the fretboard is made from rosewood and features 19 frets (12 in the clear). Overall, it’s lightweight and easy to play for beginners, with a relatively slim neck and good action out of the box.

Hardware

There are no electronics in this classical guitar, but it does come with a set of decent open-gear tuners and pearloid tuning keys. Again, these are very traditional in their look and feel, and do a good job of holding the tuning. The overall tone and feel is complemented by a nut and saddle made of Tusq, which is a refreshing change from the plastic nuts commonly found on other budget models. Inside the neck sits a two-way truss rod for easy adjusting of the guitar’s action (it comes with the correct truss rod key). Finally, this model comes bundled with a padded gig bag, which is handy for storing and – with backpack straps – transporting this guitar to and from lessons.

Sound

This model from Hola! Music is never going to beat the rich and complex tones you’d get with a premium classical guitar, but it’s still more than ample in providing a clear and warm sound that’s suitable for beginners and intermediate guitarists alike. The fact that it’s not caked in gloss (rather, just a thin lacquer) helps it resonate freely and allows the natural tone of the woods to shine.

Conclusion

Hola! Music’s offering is stylish, it plays well, and sounds very good. Beginners will have a great time with this easy-to-use model, although experienced guitarists looking for something affordable to play around with will have an equally enjoyable experience.
