Want to start learning how to play the guitar but don’t think you can afford it? Think again! This super-budget combo set includes a full-size electric guitar, an amplifier, a gig bag, and other accessories for a jaw-dropping $90 price tag! Is it an awesome find or a piece of junk? Let’s find out.

The Guitar
What can you expect for under $90? The guitar in this starter set is predictably as basic as you can get, but not bad all things considered. Made by a company called Best Choice Products, it’s a straightforward Strat-style model, featuring a double-cutaway shape that offers full access to all 22 frets of the rosewood fretboard, which sits on a sturdy bolt-on maple neck. The body is made from an unspecified solid wood, and finished in either glossy black, blue, green, or a very warm and attractive sunburst. As looks go, it’s not too dissimilar from other budget Strat-style guitars –competing with the likes of Pyle and even Squier pretty well. The electronics on this guitar are what you find on many other guitars – three single-coil pickups. All are stock and very simple, but offer a clear, bright sound and give you a voice. These are controlled by a master volume control knob and two knobs for tone, as well as a five-way pickup selector switch. As for hardware, the guitar has a vintage-style tremolo bridge, with the all-important whammy bar. It will hold its tuning quite well, providing you don’t abuse the whammy bar too much. In all, it’s clear this is a budget guitar – it doesn’t try to be anything else – but with a good set up (from your local guitar pro) you could get a lot of enjoyment from this affordable axe.
