Features

This is a very, very basic device, and one of the top recommendations we have for beginner players and folks who rock at smaller venues. Essentially, it consists of two parts – a receiver that you plug into your guitar and a transmitter that goes into the amp. It's like plugging two cable jacks like you usually do, but without the actual cables. The device utilizes Bluetooth technology and a strong 2.4 GHz frequency that actually makes it quite strong and reliable within the specified range. It is driven by batteries that are rechargeable and offer up to four hours of operation in a single charge. On the down side, that same battery-driven operation is easy to cause a heat overload, especially if your guitar has high-output pickups. In that case, it is our firm opinion that another option – the AKG WMS 40 Mini for example – will work better for you. But if you rock a standard passive guitar with no high-output pickups, this fella will work alright.

Control

The controls are pretty much non-existent here, as we are very much looking at a plug and play type of device. The only control present is the synchronize button, which is used to connect the transmitter and the receiver simply by placing them together up to 3 feet (1 m) apart and holding the button. Additionally, you can connect more than one amp to a single instrument, which is a neat function. Needless to say, it requires investing into additional JW-01s.

Performance

Now, the meaty bit – the sound, the performance. As noted, the device works just fine within smaller distances, so if you're playing a small bar gig, you'll be fine. But as soon as you wander off too much, you'll get those signal cuts nobody likes, volume drops and all the other nasty stuff. Another problem we noticed is that the sound quality isn't all that jolly when the device is used with bass guitars. The low end tends to largely disappear, meaning that even if you're a guitarist and your sound is driven by basses, this one is not the best choice.
